There are many aquarium-bred strains of the ornamental Koi despite their long-term unsuitability for the indoor aquarium. Their shape is elongated. Wide mouth carries two pairs of barbels on a large head. Colours are extremely varied becaue Koi are cultivated and are not found in nature. Koi quickly outrgow their indoor aquarium. Optimal size and colouring is best achieved outdoors. They are hearty consumers, particularly of plants and an efficient filtration system should be in place to deal with the waste. It is important to pay close attention to the water quality.
